The theme of the display is Ageing With Joy – which perfectly describes the ambition of all the products featured.

Visitors can see the latest version of the Freedom device. It is designed for users with poor dexterity (for example arthritis sufferers) and/or poor mobility. It features an easi-grip handle and a compostable film bag. It has a novel mechanism for attaching and removing the bag from the handle, enabling it to be used single-handed. The device is thus suitable for users with ataxia, for example, many stroke sufferers.

Also on display is its prototype sibling, Go, which is designed for users with good dexterity and mobility. It too features a compostable film bag, and is highly portable and discreet.

Both products are intended to be easy to use, and to fit seamlessly into daily life, whether or not you have mobility or continence issues.

User-testing of both prototypes is underway. The purpose of the testing is to ensure that the functionality and appeal of both products is enhanced, rather than compromised, as we move closer to our ambition of using 100% sustainable components in both products.

The display will feature a version of the Freedom device with a prototype film bag and the latest Go prototype, both of which are currently undergoing usability testing with target users, along with a video which explains the design approach taken.

The purpose of the trial was to assess the suitability of the design and its potential benefits to adult nocturia, urge and frequency sufferers ranging from the fully able-bodied to those with severely compromised physical mobility and/or dexterity. 90% of the cohort were female, over two-thirds were either obese or overweight, two-thirds were aged 55+, and over half use a wheelchair, mobility scooter or walking aid.

Eighty-nine percent found the handle easy to hold, and 84% of respondents found it easy to place the device and create a leakproof seal. Over 60% reported reduced anxiety and feeling more positive about their condition when using the device, and 56% either a very significant or significant increase in their confidence. Some of the highest ratings were from functionally incontinent users, those who are unable to get to the toilet in time due to physical impairments, describing Releaf Freedom as “game-changing” and “life-changing.”
